Basic facts about 香港 Hong Kong

香港 Hong Kong is one of two Special Administrative Regions of China (the second SAR being neighbouring Macau). 香港 Hong Kong is bordered to the north by the Guangdong province of mainland China and there are several border crossings, of which Lo Wu (罗湖) and Lok Ma Chau (落馬洲) are probably the most convenient for tourists as they are very easy to access via MTR from 香港 Hong Kong and subways and buses in Shenzhen on the China side. Please note that different visa regulations apply for mainland China and 香港 Hong Kong.

Hong Kong international airport 香港国际机场

(international airport code = HKG) is located on a small artificial island just off Lantau island. It is currently the world’s busiest cargo gateway and one of the busiest passenger airports in the world, handling more than 56,000,000 passengers every year. The airport has some 60.000 employees and more than 100 airlines operate flights to over 180 cities across the globe. There is a driver-less tram service connecting the different terminals and, of course, a range of shops, restaurants and bars. The airport has excellent train connections to downtown 香港 Hong Kong, and there are direct ferries to mainland China conveniently located before 香港 Hong Kong immigration and passport control.

Shopping in 香港 Hong Kong

The city has a long history of international trade, and virtually any thinkable kind of goods is available in 香港 Hong Kong. The strong tradition of buying and selling makes it an ideal place for shopping – and the complete abscense of VAT or sales tax contributes to that. There are shops and malls and markets and stores in every corner in every part of the city, all within easy reach by subway, bus, taxi or on foot. Computer equipment, tailor-made suits, clothes and luxury goods are a few of the bargains waiting for the notorious shopper. There is so much variety that it is near impossible to pin-point a certain location or area. Harbour City in Tsim Sha Tsui (尖沙咀) claims to be the largest and most diverse shopping mall in 香港 Hong Kong, and in Tsim Sha Tsui alone there are at least 11 major shopping malls. 香港 Hong Kong is said to have more than 12000 restaurants, and culinary adventures with all kinds of food can be found just about anywhere. Chinese traditional food mixed and blended with Western style cooking, served in everything from ”hole-in-the-wall” style restaurants to fancy high-class restaurants. Dim Sum, brunch, a quick cup of coffee, today’s quick special, vegetarian… You can find it all.
